Someone reuses an early sketch. A profile is described by a different name. A site measurement changes, but the drawing does not. Before long, the team has several versions of what was supposed to be the same custom flashing.

A controlled approach to standardisation can reduce that confusion without pretending every project is identical.

Standardised does not mean off the shelf

For repeat projects, standardisation means creating an approved starting point for recurring details.

The profile may still be custom manufactured, but its basic shape, naming and specification are documented and controlled.

This can work particularly well for:

Create a clear profile library

A profile library does not require complicated software. It needs a consistent structure that can be understood by estimators, purchasing staff, project managers and site supervisors.

Each approved profile should include:

  • A unique profile code
  • A descriptive name
  • A clear cross-sectional drawing
  • Dimensions and angles
  • Material and finish
  • Typical lengths
  • Intended application
  • Revision number and date
  • Variables that must be confirmed
  • An installed photograph where available

The profile code should be specific enough to distinguish similar products without becoming so complicated that staff avoid using it.

The purchase order, fabrication drawing and internal job record should all refer to the same profile code and revision.

When a change is made, note what was altered and why. That information may prevent the same issue from being rediscovered during the next project stage.

Build a repeatable ordering process

A standard ordering workflow might involve:

  1. Selecting the approved base profile
  2. Confirming the current site dimensions
  3. Checking the roof or wall build-up
  4. Confirming material, thickness and colour
  5. Identifying left-hand and right-hand versions
  6. Checking lengths and quantities
  7. Recording the correct drawing revision
  8. Attaching project-specific notes or photographs
  9. Saving the approved order with the project records

The workflow should be simple enough to follow during normal site pressure. A system that is too complicated is more likely to be bypassed.

Use feedback from installers

A useful profile library should continue improving.

When installers find that a fold needs more clearance, a dimension repeatedly requires adjustment or a profile is difficult to position, that feedback should return to the project or estimating team.

The business can then decide whether the approved profile needs to be revised or whether the issue was unique to one site.

This is especially valuable on staged developments. A lesson from the first building can improve every later stage, provided it is documented before the next order is placed.

Know when a new profile is required

Some details should remain project-specific.

Changes to roof pitch, drainage design, adjoining materials, wind exposure or architectural intent may require a revised profile rather than another copy of the previous order.

The profile library should make these variables more visible, not create false confidence that an old drawing will always fit.
