Parapets can give a building a clean, modern finish. They hide roof lines, create strong architectural edges and are often used on commercial, industrial and contemporary residential projects. But behind that simple finished look is one of the most important weatherproofing details on the roof.

A parapet wall is exposed from above and from the sides. Wind, rain and heat all place pressure on the top of the wall, the cladding junctions and the connection between the roof and the parapet. Without the right parapet flashing or parapet capping detail, water can find its way behind the wall, into the roof space or down into the building envelope.

That is why parapet flashings should never be treated as an afterthought.

Why parapet flashings matter

The purpose of a flashing is simple, but critical. It helps form a watertight joint where different parts of the building meet. Around parapet walls, this may include the top of the wall, the roof edge, the wall cladding, the gutter line or the connection between metal roofing and masonry.

A well-made parapet flashing helps direct water away from vulnerable areas. It also helps protect the upper face of the wall, which can be particularly exposed during heavy rain and wind-driven weather.

There is also the question of water direction. A parapet capping detail should not simply cover the top of the wall. It should help direct water where it can drain safely, rather than letting it run back into sensitive junctions.

NCC 2022 places clear emphasis on roofs and external walls preventing water penetration that could lead to dampness, deterioration or unhealthy conditions. For builders, designers and roof plumbers, that reinforces the value of getting these junctions right before the building is closed up.

Parapet flashings sit directly in that space between design, fabrication and installation. They are not always the largest component on the job, but they can have a major impact on long-term performance.

The best results usually come from clear information before the flashing is made. Wall width, roof pitch, cladding type, material selection, colour, fixing requirements and site measurements all help ensure the parapet flashing detail works as intended.
